SOA Brokered approach

Summary

“It is recommended to INSPIRE, GMES and GEOSS to develop a SOA brokered approach (i.e. Brokering and Mediation services) to facilitate DAP service accessibility, usability and harmonization -as demonstrated by the GEOSS ADC pilots.”

Additional information

Context It is recommended to define and move forwards a SOA brokered approach in order to improve DAP services accessibility, usability and harmonization. This approach will introduce interoperability arrangements in order to harmonize heterogeneous DAP services as well as heterogeneous Application Profiles & Extension Packages for given specifications.
It also recommended the development of specific executive tests for such brokering and interoperability arrangements.
Rationale The INSPIRE, GMES and GEOSS initiatives agree on the choice of International Standard protocols and data models to implement Data Access and Processing services. They include ISO and OGC specifications (e.g. OGC WMS, WCS, WFS, WPS, ISO 19129, 19142, 19143, 19136, etc). Besides, Interoperability arrangements are also considered by GEOSS (and by several GMES projects), such as: THREDDS/OPeNDAP, CF-netCDF, GBIF standards, etc. The three initiatives apply international standards for different applications, developing specific Application Profiles, Extension packages, Implementation Guidelines and Best Practices. That stems from their specific Enterprise Views and user communities.
Therefore, there is a clear need to provide multi-disciplinary communities with a "simplified" environment which manages the physiological DAP service heterogeneity. Such a solution has been experimented in the context of GEO ADC pilots (e.g. IP3 and AIP).
