GIGAS Contribution to GEOSS AIP-3

The report is now available of a GIGAS contribution to the
third GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP-3). The report focuses on
Data Harmonisation, and investigates the possibility of a common foundation
between GEOSS and INSPIRE using a marine forecasting scenario from GMES. The
report highlights the important role of the Observations and Measurements
standard in reconciling "geophysical parameters" view of GEOSS with the
geographic features' view of INSPIRE.

GIGAS project has officially ended

The GIGAS project has officially ended in May 2010, but the network of stakeholder that has been established through GIGAS will remain active and continue to influence and shape the evolution of the three initiatives towards convergence. This includes a number of activities that have been initialised during the project lifetime and that will be continued beyond. Examples are:

  • European GEO Standards and Interoperability Forum (SIF): The European GEO SIF has been initiated by the GIGAS project in an effort to better coordinate European requirements for GEO and GEOSS related activities, and is recognised by GEO as a regional SIF:
    http://www.thegigasforum.eu/sif
  • GIGAS Disaster Scenario and GIGAS Data Interoperability contributions to the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot Phase 3 (AIP-3)
  • GEOSS, INSPIRE, GMES , SEIS interest group hosted by the INSPIRE Forum: This interest group has been set up to offer a platform for information and discussion beyond the GIGAS project's life time:
    http://inspire-forum.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pg/groups/53/geoss-inspire-gmes-seis-interest-group/

Information and related material about the GIGAS project, its methodology and its results can be accessed on the GIGAS Website. This website will revised in the next 2 months to become a repository for material, information, links and contacts for shaping a convergent evolution of GEOSS, INSPIRE and GMES.

Methodology for Technology Watch and Comparative Analysis of Information and Data Management Systems is now publicly available

Analysing and comparing different information and data management systems is a core requirement for constantly improving and advancing on the interoperability of the system architectures that are underpinning INSPIRE, GMES, and GEOSS.
In the GIGAS project, the consortium has developed a methodology for technology watch and comparative analysis of information and data management systems. This methodology can be used by stakeholders, decision makers and engineers alike for analysing and comparing different systems with the purpose of identifying elements for convergence, technology and interoperability gaps and areas for improvement. The original GIGAS deliverable has been revised to be generically applicable and is now offered to the communities of GEOSS, INSPIRE, GMES, and related FP6/7 projects. For more information and downloading the document: http://www.thegigasforum.eu/project/material/dissemination.html.
